An introduction from Asylum.no

A person is more than a category

Terms help us think. They can also make it harder to see the person behind them.

This is an editorial introduction, not a peer-reviewed research publication.

Words as a starting point

Research and public debate use categories to organise information. Yet a person’s story contains more than one label. We want precise terminology and respect for experience to have room together.

Different questions need different sources

A question about statistics calls for different sources from a question about lived experience. When reading a report, we should ask who is represented, which definitions are used and what lies outside its scope.

Our next question

How can we use categories precisely without allowing them to become the whole explanation? This is one question we want to carry into the centre’s future work.
